Genuine Student (GS) test: still the current standard
The Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement was replaced by the Genuine Student (GS) test on 23 March 2024, and it remains the operative framework in 2026. Rather than requiring applicants to prove intent to leave Australia temporarily, the GS test assesses genuine intention to study – evaluating the logical connection between an applicant’s academic history, their chosen course, and their home country’s circumstances, alongside course progression evidence, immigration history and visa compliance.
A meaningful tightening since launch: the Department now only accepts English test results from secure, in-person test centres. Online, remote-proctored and at-home test formats – regardless of score – are rejected. This applies across the student visa pathway, so factor test-centre availability into application timelines.

UK passport holders: benefits still current
Under the Australia-UK Free Trade Agreement, employers sponsoring eligible UK citizens or permanent residents under the Skills in Demand visa may continue to benefit from a Labour Market Testing exemption. This means the employer may not need to advertise the position before lodging the nomination, potentially simplifying and shortening the sponsorship process.
The previous benefit allowing UK passport holders to receive a visa for up to four years, rather than being limited by the former short-term occupation stream, is no longer relevant. The Skills in Demand visa does not have separate short-term and medium-term streams, so UK applicants are no longer receiving a distinct benefit in relation to visa duration.
UK applicants must still meet all other visa requirements, including having the skills and experience required for the nominated role and satisfying any applicable licensing or registration requirements.
